When Hypnosis and Cancer are brought up in the same sentence a popular study almost always brought up is the  "Effect of Psychosocial Treatment on Survival of Patients with Metastatic Breast Cancer," by David Spiegel, H.C. Kraemer, J.R. Bloom and E. Gottheil, published in The Lancet in 1989. The findings or conclusions of this study was that patients who also used Hypnosis along with conventional treatment, lived on a average twice as long as the patients that didn't.

This was a powerful conclusion but not one without challenge and controversy. After this many studies and analysis were done to understand and study the impact of psychological interventions in long term survival.

Some other meta-analysis and similar studies have suggested psychological interventions or therapies have shown survival improvement over 12 month period (but not longer term survival) along with a reduction in psychological symptoms.

A better way of looking at Hypnosis in Cancer, might be as supportive therapy and adjunctive help in the recovery process. While there isn't enough data to support long term survival, there is a general consensus in use of Hypnosis and similar psychological interventions helps in reduction of psychological symptoms and perhaps even 12 month survival.
